We're talking tips today. The cupcake decorating kind that is.You see, I just
noticed that ir has been awhile since I followed up on the cupcake baking
posts. I guess weve been caught up in cupcake tutorials, you and I.
Okay, so let's go back to this post's topic. I thought I'd show you the decorating tips I usually use when frosting cupcakes and how they look like when piped. I buy all my tips from Cooks Exchange in Glorietta. Sadly, they are closed for the mall's renovation. But they still have branches in Rockwell and Megamall. All are from Ateco.
Here are some closed star tips. Tip #855 is my all-time favorite one. You can see it used all over this blog. I love closed star tips because of the defined swirls they make. A smaller version is tip #846. Tip #854 has more "teeth" than the other two.
Here is a batch of frosting I prepared so I can show you how they look like piped.
Don't they look pretty? See the well defined swirls?
Now, here are some open star tips. While the closed star tips curve at the top, the open star tips are designed to have more frosting on the center, creating a more stable top for a cupcake. So, if you have a heavy cupcake topper, and you want swirls on your frosting, go for the open star tips instead of the closed ones.
Here's how they look like piped. Swirls are less defined than the what the closed star tips create but are more stable
Lastly, if you want to go for simple effect, here are some plain round ones. Tips with numbers 809, 806 and 805 should be able to do the trick.
Hope this post helps you guys! More to come! :)

Hi Anonymous, they're from Ateco. I buy them from Cooks Exchange :)
Hi Aikko! Finally, cupcakes! Question, did you use a buttercream frosting for this post? what other types of frosting will hold up beautifully when piped?
wow thanks for this!
Hey Aikko! Still remember me? Just wanted to drop by and visit your blog. Congrats on keeping up a great blog. :)
Hi Aileen,
Whipped chocolate ganache will also hold nicely when piped :)

Awesome cupcake designs! Congratulations! I'm sure I would always visit this site. Thanks very much for sharing.
You're welcome! :)
Aikko, I would like to try and make the smooth piped topping. I went to Michaels and could not find a large enough tip to get that "rope" size swirl. Where can I buy a 809,806,805 tip? And what brand are they. Sure do love your blog and sincerely appreciate your help. Cheryl
Hi Cheryl, Their brand is Ateco :) But Wilton has an equivalent, try looking for Wilton 1M :)
Hello Aiko! Im a newbie in Baking. Right now im slowly buying my tool and ingredients. Can you suggest particular icing colors i must have? With so many colors to choose from but with limited budget, its so confusing. :(
Hi dear Anonymous, try the primary colors plus brown and black first and build on from there - primaries are yellow, red and blue. From then on you can make orange (yellow and red), green (blue and yellow), purple (red and blue) Hope it helps :)
what about using frosting from the grocery, like betty crocker? will it hold up to make pretty cupcakes with the swirled top
Hi Piercingpeg, sorry, I haven't tried piping the frosting from Betty Crocker yet.

Hi Aikko!
It's me again. I've been searching for the Ateco tips you posted here (particularly the open and closed star tips). I went to Cooks Exchange in Glorietta 4 and Megamall but unfortunately I was only able to find DChef#824. The staff in both stores said they do not sell Ateco tips anymore. Do you have idea on where I can find them?
Thanks you again,
April
PS1: I'll try to ask their Rockwell branch one of these days to check if they have them.
PS2: And what kind of piping/pastry bag is a good investment?
Thanks, April!Palagi ako sa Cooks Exchange in Glorietta 4, that was where I bought it, try online din, through http://www.facebook.com/love2bakeco
I have their pricelist and they have 849 :)
Oh and for your PS2, I didn't invest is pastry bags, I use disposable ones I bought i bulk from Sweetcraft :)
I called Cooks Exchange's Rockwell branch to inquire on Ateco tips but to no avail. The staff informed me that they haven't got Ateco tips for about a year now. Sadness :(
Hmm. Do you mean Ateco #849? How does it look like when piped? I really like the effect of #855 since I first saw it in your post: http://bakehappy.blogspot.com/2010/06/pink-and-green-hearts-in-between.html#.UPq3X_K4v59
BTW, that was the first post I read in your blog while I was searching for I think cupcake images on google. And I am thankful to have found your blog. You really are an inspiration.
Noted on your reply to PS2. My cousin saw some of those when we went to Chocolate Lovers. But we might check it out at Sweetcraft because it's our next stop. Hohoho! You see, we've been searching/buying baking/decorating tools for the past weeks.
Thank you again, and again and again! :)
- April (excuse my commenting as Anonymous for the...err...3rd time, will fix it in my subsequent comments hopefully)
You are most welcome, April! Balitaan mo ko on your adventures :) Good luck!
